I have rarely heard complete silence. Even in the most remote locations (backpacking in the midst of Canada), there is the noise of the wind and the stirrings of critters. There is the song of birds and the shifting branches. Maybe Jack Kerouac was listening to his internal emptyness when he said this quote.
